Shape Advice

shape advice

Of course you can wear whatever you like, but if you are unsure what suits you or how to wear a particular style of jewellery that you would like to try, please read our simple guide below.

necklaces and necklines

Think about the style of neckline you will be wearing if you are choosing a necklace or pendant to wear with a particular top or dress:

·        roll-neck or high neck – necklaces can look odd with this type of neckline, so perhaps choose some dramatic earrings instead:

·        round neck – choose a fairly short (40cm or so) single or multi-stranded necklace or a choker to sit inside the neckline:

·        v-neck or low-cut round neck – choose a Y-shaped necklace or long pendant to follow the line of the garment:

·        strapless top – most necklaces will sit well – think whether you want the piece to sit above or below the line of the material:

earrings, necklaces and face shapes

With the shape of your face and how you wear your hair in mind, the following tips may help!

heart shaped faces – to highlight this shape, wear earrings that are wider at the bottom than the top.  All lengths and types of necklaces work well with this face shape:

long faces - short to medium length earrings and a short round necklace complement this face shape. More chunky jewellery is a good option to balance out a longer face:

oval faces – all types of earrings and necklaces suit this face type, especially teardrops and ovals:

round faces – wear long, dangling earrings to balance out this face shape. V-shaped necklaces also add length if worn with a round face. Avoid round, chunky earrings:

square faces - large, round or long dangly earrings without angular lines are a good choice here.  Avoid large, angular styles:

long hair – small earrings may be hidden so go for more dramatic styles:

short hair – large earrings can look unbalanced, depending on the style.

long and short necks – long drop earrings work well with a long neck, but this style may emphasise a short neck, where shorter drops look better.  However, putting your hair up elongates the neck, so you can then go for those chandeliers!

balancing your jewellery

Make-up artists often advise ‘bold eyes or bold lips....but not both’.  The same rule can be applied to wearing your jewellery – if you are wearing a dramatic necklace, it may be better to keep your earrings discreet, or perhaps not to wear any at all.  A statement pair of earrings will make more impact if worn alone.

If you have a matching necklace, earrings, bracelet and brooch set, be selective.  You don’t have to wear them all at the same time!
